This is a program which is always organized by the department of tourism of the townhall. This program is always during the months of November and December. A perfect excuse for the people of this beautiful town, to get to know its monuments and some curious stories about them.
Places I visit during these days are:
The Archbishop Fonseca palace.
It was a theatrical visit preformed by the company of Educlogicproduccions.
The palace was built in 1519 by the archbishop of Toledo, Alonso de Fonseca. It was a colegio mayor, which means that it was for the poor but smart student. There were 6 of them in the whole of Spain, 4 of them here in Salamanca. Here the student would receive, food, lodging and education. I would say that the environment really traps you and will get the best of you to be a good student. It has a marvelous renaissance patio, really a gem.
By the way. The Fonseca family has been a very important family here in Salamanca in het 15th and 16th century. Architects of this building were: Diego de Siloe, Rodrigo Gil de Hontañon and Juan de Alava.
For some people in Salamanca it is also known as the Colegio de los nobles Irlandeses. This because in the 19th century the Catholics had to run from Ireland because of the religious emancipation which did not take place yet in their country so they found refuge in Salamanca. They stayed in Salamanca between 1827 and 1936.
Nowadays the building belongs to the public university of Salamanca (USAL). It is used as hotel but and as multifunctional building. They organize important congresses and conferences here. Here in Salamanca we use all the monuments still for everyday use. Which makes Salamanca a thriving city.
