Cáceres, the City of a Thousand Coats of Arms

Cáceres, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and nicknamed “the city of a thousand coats of arms”: its stone coats of arms seem to grow on the facades like ivy. Its historic center transports you to another era.

Outside the walls lies modern Cáceres with its Plaza Mayor; and inside, the Monumental City, a labyrinth of cobbled alleyways, Renaissance palaces, and churches crowned by storks’ nests. It is one of the best-preserved medieval ensembles in Europe, where Muslim, Jewish, and Christian influences coexist. The tour includes the Bujaco Tower, the Arco de la Estrella (Star Arch), the Plaza de Santa María with its noble palaces, and the Co-cathedral of Santa María. We will visit a cistern to learn how people were able to have water in their homes. We will stroll through the Old Jewish Quarter, with its narrow streets and whitewashed houses.

To replenish your energy, Cáceres’ gastronomy is hearty and honest: Iberian ham from the Dehesa. Local specialties include Torta del Casar, an almost liquid cheese, and patatera, a type of sausage. And for dessert, there are the convent sweets from the Convent of San Pablo, made in cloister and sold at the convent’s turnstile.
